I have defended Lee... remember?

No explanations needed... he deserves a place on the list.  More so (probably) than Scott, Doolittle or Stormin' Norman.

Were you to ask me, Lee "outranks" both Doolittle and Schwartzkopf on this list.  The further question is... does either Longstreet or Tom Jackson "outrank" Doolittle or Schwartzkopf?  That would make the list look like this:

Washington
Scott
Grant
Lee
Sherman
Pershing
Ike
Patton
Ridgeway

Longstreet/Jackson

I will say this about both generals:  It is tough to place one on the list and not both.  Jackson has repeatedly been referred to as Lee's "Hammer" and Longstreet as Lee's "Anvil" and both are viewed today (really... even today) as the best examples of Corps Commanders in US history.  Jackson's tactical actions are still taught at military academies across the globe, and Longstreet's holding actions are still standard operating procedures in today's infantry command classes.

To keep the list to ten, I feel we'd have to decide if Scott "outranked" either Longstreet or Jackson, and that both of Jambo's original inclusions should be on the list.  In point of fact, we might have to measure Sherman as well... Longstreet and Jackson might even nudge him out.
