Well, you missed this one, I guess.
Seems that one of the ST: Enterprise episodes had Captain Archer (sp?) fight a war with genetically engineered bad guys... and the Klingons stole the technology in an attempt to make themselves better fighters. The thing mutates, takes the crew of Enterprise to save them all (Klingons, mind you) and the cure for the genetic mutation leaves them with ridged foreheads and funky shoulders.
This is canon enough that Warf refuses to "discuss" the event (it happened in his past, remember) because it is shameful to him that the race had to alter itself to better itself.
