Ryan has caught me in another mistake... and I admit it.
It would seem that I was far too dismissive of the Fabian Society of Britain in a recent post. They are not a bunch of passive wannabees with aspirations of intellectual elitism, but a well organized political machine operating behind the Labour Party-scenes.
Rather than adopting the Blair/Labour image as their own, they seem to have founded the party... or so their website claims. I can't imagine that such a group, with such "collective" aspirations, has made such an impact in a post-Empire society, but they do claim to have done so. I'll have to read more about them, I guess...
Still, 6,300 members isn't a lot... but it is more than the Bolsheviks had in 1917, and the Fabian agenda is far more "grass roots" than the Bolsheviks were, which means it is more appealing to the common man. Their traditional socialist agenda is far less appealing today than it was at the turn of the last century, however, and that will effect their ability to gain new support.
I hope that is true, anyway...
