Salient observation. I've heard this idea somewhat touched on by truly moderate, freedom loving Muslims. That the true "extremism" in Islam is unfortunately those that embrace liberal democracy.

I think the "fringe" of that faith are the ones that feel that women have the same inherent rights, freedoms and individual value as men... or that there exists a universal right to express yourself no matter what your faith is...
