How can anyone NOT see the "threat" that a missile defense system (especially one that WORKS) poses to the Ruskies?
Jambo made the point in his post: WE (the US) have the capacity to launch "first strikes" without employing ICBMs that the Russians could easily detect... but THEY do not. THEY have no functioning "stealth" platforms capable of entering our airspace undetected... and a functioning missile defense system would negate or severely limit their ability to strategically respond to a US "first-strike".
The real root of this problem is that we have, once again, "raised the ante" in the MAD race (mutually assured destruction). By removing or limiting our risk of a retaliatory strike, the Ruskies feel that we are taking them back to the "Cold War" tables of Gorby and Ron. I do not doubt for a second that Putin/Medvedev are very serious about the level of "threat" that they see this posing for them and the "Russia" they are trying very hard to build... a Russia that rivals the Soviet Union in global influence and capacity, economically, militarily, and culturally.
