Jeez... check out Franken!

Ryan is sweating the MN Senate race... texting me about the latest rumors and hints that Franken has actually WON... which he HASN'T... yet.

Got me to looking at his Party's platform though (found HERE) and WOW... are these "liberals" getting frigging weird!

When the DFL (Democratic Farm and Labor Party) was founded in 1944... the only difference between them and the rest of the Democratic Party was their TOTAL support of farm and union issues (union benefits, farm subsidies, etc).

This led me to ask two questions: What was the difference between the GOP and the DNC back then? and What was the cause to drive them SO FAR left since then?

Near as I can tell, the BIGGEST difference between the GOP and the Dems in 1944-46 was a balanced budget. No one expect a "balanced budget" from either side... we were fighting a world war... but the fight was over how UNBALANCED it was going to be. The GOP wanted to keep it to what they deemed "reasonable" enough to pay back in 10 years... the Dems didn't care WHEN it got paid back, as long as they had the credit to spend.

The push that took the DFL and the left-wing of the DNC SO FAR left? I think it was the end of farm subsidies during the Reagan years. The mid-eighties were tough on central and northern Minnesota... farmers, miners and unions. I attribute the election of the most famous DFLer ever... Paul Wellstone... to this aspect of the Reagan years. The trend has only continued since then.

Check out the platform, though... it's kinda scary.
