The new Congress shaping up...

It's good to find a sense of identity early.

Three parts of the Patriot Act were defeated today. All had to do with surveillance. Whether or not we as a nation are stronger or weaker as a result can be discussed at length, but I'm bringing up two points.

#1) 22 Republicans voted against renewal. These, according to Democrat leadership, were the Tea Partiers making a stand against big government. It does not surprise me at all that an immediate impact is being felt... After all, the new guys need to make a mark. But is astounding is that the old guard Republican leadership would NOT take that into consideration. The provisions for renewal were put on a bill requiring a 2/3s majority and defeated because Republican leadership didn't have its house in order. Embarrassing.

#2) Was the Patriot Act antithetical to "true" conservative ideals? Is it an abuse of power? And in the Pantheon of Conservative Ideals, do domestic liberties and small government trump national security? (The last being a hypothetical question, not a reflection of the success/failure of the Patriot Act)

Have to get the kids... Feel free to respond in my absence.
