The highest governing body of the Catholic Church in the United States is the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and yesterday it broke a 35 year precedent by NOT electing the sitting Vice President of the Conference into the President's chair.
Instead, they picked the Archbishop of New York, the Most Reverend Timothy M. Dolan. Dolan is a very articulate and outspoken man, who has made quite a name for himself over the last 15 years or so as someone who speaks plainly and without holding anything back. His positions in regards to faith and morals are unambiguous and pretty traditional in their make up... and he has been a favorite of mine since I first heard him speak after he became Archbishop of Milwaukee in 2002.
I told everyone I have discussed this with that Dolan was going to make waves... and he obviously has or he wouldn't have moved into such a prestigious position as the President of the USCCB without first having been at least Vice President... as has been the case for more than a quarter of a century.
The man gives interviews and holds panel discussions all the time... if you get a chance to listen, do so. No one out there does a better job of presenting modern Catholic views in a tone and language that anyone can understand and learn from.
My prediction? Cardinal within three years... and he might even be a papal candidate some day.
