It's time to start talking...

About Vice Presidents.

And let's do something new. Let's talk about VPs that'll actually WORK. Not like Cheney, who brought nothing to the ticket except a lot of money and foreign policy experience. And not like Gore, who couldn't even deliver his home state.

McCain has only one REAL choice. He's going be get hammered on domestic issues. He needs some help geographically. Thomas mentioned the governer of Minnesota, but being that he's got collapsing bridges in his front yard, he's a liability for domestic issues, and I seriously doubt he could carry Minnesota, as blue a state as is in the union. That rep from Ohio, the one that spoke at the rally McCain apologized for the talk host dude... No. He's not going to deliver the Steel belt. And he's got nothing that either Hilary or Obama couldn't claim from their Senate seats.

His one real choice? Haley Barbour, governor of Mississippi.

Now geographically, one would instantly think, "Well? When was the last time Mississippi voted for a democratic president? Carter?" And you'd be correct. BUT, if Obama wins the nomination you have a massive grass roots movement that could change that, and I'm not just talking about the black vote. Lots of people here now aren't FROM Mississippi, and Obama is an orator this country hasn't seen since perhaps Reagan. But slap good ol' Haley onto the ticket and what does McCain get? The man that oversaw the largest recovery program in the nation, and make no mistake. Louisiana got hit hard, no doubt, but count the parishes in their disaster area, including Rita. Not even a dozen. No doubt what they had was devastating, but think about this. 75 % of the state of Mississippi saw a MINIMUM of a category one hurricane for at least four hours. 75+ mph winds for at least four hours all the way to pissing distance from the Tennessee border. We all know what the Coast looked like, and we're all kind of biased about Harrison, Hancock and Jackson county damage, but go two counties north in Hattiesburg and they had cat. 3 winds for as long as we did. Jackson, 3 HOURS from the Coast, had sustained cat. 2 for at least four hours. (Here's something. Name the last county/state NOT declared a disaster area after being hit by a cat 1 hurricane. Give up? There is none. They all were as long as they've named storms.)

Who actually made Mississippi look GOOD while Nagen and Blanco were shoveling human waste out of the Superdome? Haley Barbour. There isn't a Democrat alive that can touch him on any domestic issue, period. PLUS, he not only gives McCain MS, but AL, GA, a huge chunk of LA and pick several other southern states. A VP that actually WORKS.

Man, they should pay me for this.

I am still having trouble thinking of a Governor that can claim the level of success that Barbour can in the realm of recovery and rebuilding after a disaster. No other sitting Governor (or one from Katrina/Rita) can say as much.

MS has boomed nearly the entire time he has been in office, and if the economy has lagged, its been NATIONAL influence and not mistakes or misteps within the state.

He even has the added advantage of being able to claim some success that isn't entirely his... like gaming and the education tax relief. MS has climbed out of the education "basement" and into the middle ground of national testing scores. THAT hasn't happened EVER!

If McCain is looking for experience, solid conservative background, tons of success and the "Southern" side of American politics... Barbour is the only real choice.
